Basically just go to the one or more points along your coast area and count/estimate the number of each bird species out on the water, at any time of day which is convenient for you, and which hopefully maximizes the number of birds there (some gulls congregate in the afternoon, depending on tides, weather, etc.). These bird numbers may be very small numbers or larger ones, and this is all valuable information. If there are no birds, then report that also, because it is still valuable information. That count process might take less than half-an-hour or an hour, depending on how much water you need to look at, and how many birds you need to count.
Feel free to optionally add one or more nearby locations, not on our list, if you want, and break them out for separate reports.
Then file your one or several reports (see the Example report below), either sharing ("Share with others in your party") it/them to the dedicated eBird account "LIS seawatch" and/or just send by email to us at robben99@gmail.com. This project is being created by many CT & NY birders taking a "snapshot" count at a point in time, of "all" gulls and other birds in Long Island Sound (in CT and NY coastal LIS waters) on 2017 March 25 and April 9, and 2018 March 25.
